[Word] Office 2000 vs. 2003 vs. 2007

A few months ago, I had my first experience with Word 2007, running on a
Citrix server that an employment agency used to perform screening tests for
job candidates. Eventually, I found most of the tools (commands) that we
needed in order to complete the test. However, due to the number of things
that were moved around, to seemingly illogical places, I consider myself to
be an expert with Microsoft Word, and I've never had much, if any, trouble,
finding things in previous versions. My knowledge of Word is pretty deep,
and began with Word 6 for Windows 3.x.

Thanks to the ribbon, and, more important, to the seemingly illogical
rearrangement of tools, I wasted a lot of time. I don't object to making
things easier for novices, but not at the expense of a huge base of
experienced users, many of whom have been loyal to Word for a decade or
more.

Maybe the ribbon should be lumped in with the Vista UI as a major flop. Word
processing coders, start your editors. :-)

I still believe that Word 2000 was the sweet spot. For that matter, Excel
2000 and Access 2000 have almost everything I've ever needed, and I've long
since written VBA code to compensate for the handful of omissions.

Thanks, Phil !!

The ribbon in 2007 totally sucks. I've dealt with it on my husband's
computer, helping him to figure out how the heck to find or do various
things that are now buried lord knows where in the stupid ribbon. But I
would like to install & learn it so that I can write macros for customers
who have it, etc.

Anyone else have any comments on my questions ?

Oh, and Phil -- have a great weekend ! And everyone else !

Cheers,
JoJo

I'm fairly happy with Office 2003, although I really only use Word &
Outlook (sometimes Excel). As someone who likes to use keyboard
shortcuts, I will say that every version buries common tasks deeper, so
that it takes more keystrokes to accomplish the same thing. e.g.
remember when Ctrl+H brought up the Replace dialog box & you DIDN'T have
to press "more" to use wildcards (then called pattern matching). I
actually liked several things about Word 95, although each version after
has been more robust.

I don't use Outlook for email, but use all it's other features. I only
have 2 problems with it:
1) Since it's not my default email program, I can't use the contact
list for mailing addresses in Word (Word says there's no default email
client).
2) If I decide to use Smart Tags in Word, it doesn't find the contact
that exists in Outlook. Not sure if this is related to the first issue.

Never tried it because I heard too many complaints about the ribbon.
