[Word] Getting Word document template name of a 2007 template in
2003

I assume that you have the compatibility pack installed, since you can use a
DOCX in 2003. I checked, and in the File/open dialog box, 2003 does
recognize DOTM templates. So then I tried opening a DOCX in 2007. In
properties, it showed the file was using NORMAL.DOTM. When I opened same
doc in 2003, after the conversion it was using NORMAL.DOT. On that basis I
would guess that 2003 just can't recognize 2007 templates.
So, if you can't do it automatically, how about a manual work around. In
2007, add the desired template name into the document properties. Now when
the doc is opened in 2003, the user can find the template name and manually
associate the correct template. I assume you already have things setup so
that both programs are looking for the templates in the same location. By
default they do point to different locations.
Finally, if nothing else works, can you suggest that until everyone is on
2007, everyone continues to use DOC/DOT formats in 2007.
