[Word] Word 2003 TOC problem with bolding of TOC numbers

Yes, I hate that. People have their little shortcuts to the doc and you make a new one, they get annoyed to have to change it..its a negative combination, the fact that Word won't let you delete the last paragraph mark, or replace it, which is what you would have to do in order to keep the same doc number in the DM system. I have the same issues at work.

If you are moving to 2007, this becomes less of a problem when the docs are saved as docx or docm.

Oh darn, never had that before. I will just have to look it over when I get time and see what I can see because it is a System document and therefore not easily moved around because it has an automatic document number assigned to it by the Document Management System. Oh well thanks for the great tips.

Hopefully I can explain this appropriately...I suspect that some paragraph between two level 2 headings ended up bolded, but someone has selected and turned off the bolding....but technically its still there waiting to rear its ugly head. Or, I have seen this when someone inserts a page break next between two headings that do not have any content or normal style content between. Deleting the page break causes styling to go awry.

Depending on the complexity of the document, I'd be tempted to select all and then apply normal to it, then go through the document and reapply the heading styles.

Or select ALL except the last paragraph marker, and copy, then paste into a new blank document and see if the problem is repeated.

Why would an Update All Fields suddenly start bolding the TOC 2 level numbering only (we are using User Defined styles and this has never happened before). You can remove it but it automatically comes back after every Update All Fields and it only seems to happen in this one document??? Very weird!!

Any ideas what the permanent fix is??? - thanks - Bonnie
