[Word] Figure Blackout in Word 2007

I work with a high school Physics teacher who inserts figures from the 
College Board PDF files for her tests. Some of these figures become 
partially or totally blacked out by a black band when they are opened in 
Word 2007, but not in earlier versions of Word. If the files are saved 
in .docx format, the figures cannot be seen in earlier Word versions, 
but they can be seen if the save is in the .doc format from 2007. I have 
seen this phenomena described in an email to the College Board, so it is 
not only local. Has anyone encountered this discontinuity or have a 
solution to it?
